How to long division with remainder? How to divide a three digit number by a one digit number (e.g 416 ÷ 7)?

Dividing a three digit number by a one digit number (for example 416 ÷ 7) involves several steps.
  • Place the divisor before the division bracket and place the dividend (416) under it.

  • Examine the first digit of the dividend(4). It is smaller than 7 so can't be divided by 7 to produce a whole number. Next take the first two digits of the dividend (41) and determine how many 7's it contains. In this case 41 holds five sevens (5*7=35) but not six (6*7=42). Place the 5 above the division bracket.

  • Multiply the 5 by 7 and place the result (35) below the 41 of the dividend.

How to do Long Division with Remainders?

When we are given a long division to do it will not always work out to a whole number. Sometimes there will be numbers left over. These are known as remainders. Taking an example similar to that on the Long Division page it becomes more clear: 435 ÷ 25. If you feel happy with the process on the Long Division
page you can skip the first bit.
 
4 ÷ 25 = 0 remainder 4 The first number of the dividend is divided by the divisor.

The whole number result is placed at the top. Any remainders are ignored at this point.
25 × 0 = 0 The answer from the first operation is multiplied by the divisor. The result is placed under the number divided into.
4 – 0 = 4 Now we take away the bottom number from the top number.

Bring down the next number of the dividend.
43 ÷ 25 = 1 remainder 18 Divide this number by the divisor.

The whole number result is placed at the top. Any remainders are ignored at this point.
25 × 1 = 25 The answer from the above operation is multiplied by the divisor. The result is placed under the last number divided into.
43 – 25 = 18 Now we take away the bottom number from the top number.

Bring down the next number of the dividend.
185 ÷ 25 = 7 remainder 10 Divide this number by the divisor.

The whole number result is placed at the top. Any remainders are ignored at this point.
25 × 7 = 175 The answer from the above operation is multiplied by the divisor. The result is placed under the number divided into.
185 – 175 = 10 Now we take away the bottom number from the top number.


There is still 10 left over but no more numbers to bring down.

With a long division with remainders the answer is expressed as 17 remainder 10 as shown in the diagram


How to explain long division to children?

Solution for 531219 ÷ 579 - with remainder

Step 1

Long division works from left to right. Since 579 will not go into 5, a grey 0 has been placed over the 5 and we combine the first two digits to make 53. In this case, 53 is still too small. A further 0 is added above 3 and a third digit is added to make 531. Note the other digits in the original number have been turned grey to emphasise this.
The closest we can get to 531 without exceeding it is 5211 which is 9 × 579. These values have been added to the division, highlighted in red.

The Everything Kids' Science Experiments Book

This is a book of science experiments, for kids. All of which you can do at home. For most of the experiments you probably already have all the required items.
The book is organized around ideas like 'Acids'. In the 'Acids' category there will be a number of acid related experiments of varying difficulty. Once you have worked through the experiments in a category it gives you a fairly good knowledge of the category subject.
The experiment which I found to be the easiest, while at the same time very impressive, is the one where you dissolve an eggshell while keeping the egg inside intact.

Basher Science: Periodic Table

Periodic Table is a good introduction to chemistry for upper elementary to middle school kids. It is about 100 pages long and each element has it own page.
Each element has a description written as a narrative. Strontium says: " I'm Scottish, named after the town of Strontian where I was discovered. You may see me as a shy, run-of-the-mill, silver-colored metal, but I've got a few surprises..." The idea being that children associate an element's characteristics with it's name and have some fun while learning.

The way science works is a introduction to the advances man has made in understanding the natural world and to the deductive process of scientific discovery. It has 60 experiments which kids can try at home. The book does a great job at explaining the working of complex concepts like gravity, the atom, optical illusions and gravity.
I would recommend the book for all kids aged 10 and older.

Magic School Bus

The Magic School Bus books are some of the best science books for young kids. I would recommend them for ages 4 to 8.
Inside the human body
In this book the kids go on the bus and then the bus shrinks to the size of a chip. It then enters someone's body through the mouth and works it's way through the digestive system.
In the time of dinosaurs
In this one the kids go off to a paleontologist dig site. From there they time travel back to the age of the dinosaurs. Of course a book like this can't cover dinosaurs in detail. It does however do an excellent job of wetting a child's appetite for science.
The authors really are good at creating adventurous and educational books. They make effective use of comic book style drawings and text, to keep the kids interested. Children learn quite a bit without even realizing it.

How to do Long division tricks for kids

"In arithmetic, long division is a standard procedure suitable for dividing simple or complex multidigit numbers. It breaks down a division problem into a series of easier steps. As in all division problems, one number, called the dividend, is divided by another, called the divisor, producing a result called the quotient. It enables computations involving arbitrarily large numbers to be performed by following a series of simple steps"


Solution for 742 ÷ 31 - with remainder

Step 1
